Eat Alberta First: Delicious Food Locally Sourced
By Karen Anderson
After 21 years as a nurse and nurse practitioner, I traded my stethoscope for a chef’s apron and a new mission: sharing the stories and flavours of Alberta’s remarkable food artisans. Since founding Alberta Food Tours in 2006, I’ve had the privilege of guiding both locals and visitors through the culinary landscapes of Calgary, Canmore, Banff, and Edmonton.
I’ve always believed that food is one of our greatest connectors. Whether I’m writing cookbooks like Eat Alberta First, championing local producers, or gathering around the table with family and friends, my heart is always in the kitchen. Cooking is how we nourish one another, celebrate community, and stay grounded in a busy world.
I’m delighted to share these three recipes with Alberta Senior Living readers. They reflect the spirit of this province I love so deeply — where prairie fields meet mountain peaks — and I hope they bring comfort, connection, and a little Alberta warmth to your table.

#EatAlbertaFirst Tip
From mid-July to late August, you’ll find U-picks across Alberta where you can fill your own buckets with haskaps, saskatoons, and raspberries. Strawberries are often of the everbearing variety and will continue until the first frost happens. At Lethbridge’s Broxburn Vegetables and Cafe, that is often not until late September.
