Letter from The Honourable Nathan Neudorf, Minister of Assisted Living and Social Services

Across Alberta, seniors are helping shape the strong, caring and vibrant communities we all call home. Whether through volunteering, mentoring, caregiving, working, sharing culture and traditions, or staying active in local organizations, seniors continue to make meaningful contributions every day.

As Minister of Assisted Living and Social Services, I am committed to ensuring Alberta’s seniors have access to the information, supports and community connections they need to age well. Alberta is home to more than 885,000 seniors, and that number is growing each month. By 2035, more than one million Albertans will be seniors. This growth is a reminder of how important it is to plan today for the needs of tomorrow.

We know that most seniors want to remain in their homes and communities for as long as possible. More than 90 per cent of Alberta seniors live in private dwellings, and many want to age in place close to family, friends, neighbours and the services they rely on. That is why Alberta’s government continues to invest in programs that support independence, dignity and quality of life.

In 2026-27, our government is investing more than $6 billion to support Alberta seniors. These investments include financial assistance, transportation programs, home and community supports, social and wellness activities, continuing care, home care, and elder abuse prevention. These supports help low-income seniors maintain a high quality of life by enabling access to essential services, including transportation to medical appointments, as well as remain socially active and live safely and independently.

Staying informed is one of the best ways seniors and their families can make decisions with confidence. I encourage our communities to learn about the programs and services available to them for their current and future needs. Community organizations, local seniors’ centres and Alberta government resources can help connect people with the right information at the right time.

Healthy aging is about more than health care. It is about having the opportunity to participate, contribute, build relationships and feel a sense of belonging. When seniors are engaged and connected, our entire province is stronger.

To Alberta’s seniors: thank you for the role you continue to play in our families, workplaces and communities. Our government will continue working with partners across the province to help you stay informed, engaged, healthy and connected, while aging with dignity in the places you call home.

Honourable Nathan Neudorf
