Sponsored: A Different Kind of Doctor
A local Doctor of Acupuncture is offering something increasingly rare in today’s healthcare system: truly compassionate care paired with proven, effective solutions for chronic pain and complicated conditions.
Do you ever wonder why some doctors seem naturally warm, patient, and empathetic, while others have a bedside manner better suited for the drive-through? In the case of Dr. Melanie Morrill, Dr. Ac., her compassion comes from lived experience- years spent on the patient side, searching for answers that never seemed to come.
“I suffered from migraines in my teens and twenties,” she explains. “I had migraine headaches three to five days every single week. They were so intense that I was often bedridden and became physically sick.”
At that time and to this day, migraines aren’t well understood. Melanie was offered the usual options: medications that sometimes provided partial relief, lifestyle adjustments to avoid triggers, and endless trial-and-error. “It was no way to live,” she says. “I was young and should’ve been living a bright, vibrant life. Instead, I monitored my exposure to fluorescent lights and braced myself for unpredictable weather changes. Spring and Fall were brutal. And in Edmonton? It was Winter in the morning and Summer by the afternoon.”
Everything changed when her family doctor referred her to an acupuncturist. For the first time in years, she experienced true, lasting relief.
“This is why I call my practice ‘The Last Resort With The Best Results,’” she shares. “Most people come to me after trying everything else—after being given the same discouraging prognosis, the same prescriptions, and the same message: ‘You’ll just have to learn to live with it.’”
Her own recovery was so transformative that it shaped the course of her life. “Acupuncture quite literally saved my life,” Melanie says. “After that, I knew I wanted to bring this medicine to the world.”
After becoming an Acupuncturist, someone she loved suffered from peripheral neuropathy. Watching them struggle only strengthened her determination. “Your golden years should be golden, not spent battling insufferable pain while being told by professionals that there’s nothing they can do.”
Knowing that Eastern Medicine excels where Western Medicine often struggles, she chose to learn how to treat neuropathy—diabetic, chemotherapy-induced, idiopathic, and everything in between. Today, she proudly maintains a 90% success rate treating this once poorly managed condition.
“I was tired of watching older adults get dismissed with, ‘You’re just getting older.’ That’s not a diagnosis. And it’s certainly not a treatment plan,” she says. “People deserve real options.”
Melanie brings the same commitment to other complicated, chronic conditions, including fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, and post-shingles nerve pain. While each treatment plan is individually customized, all follow a framework refined over years of study, practice, and patient feedback.
Patients consistently describe her care as compassionate and knowledgeable. “Melanie looked me in my eyes and wanted to know me, not just my condition,” says Betty. “I felt like a person, not a patient. Actually, I don’t think she ever used the word ‘patient.’” Others say, “She saved my life,” “Her neuropathy treatments gave me my life back,” and “I don’t know how else to describe it except a miracle.”
Melanie understands their struggles because she has lived them. “I’ve sat where my patients sit. I’ve felt their pain, their hopelessness, and the frustration of being told nothing more can be done. That’s why treating the ‘untreatable’ has become my life’s mission.”
She has built a team that shares this same philosophy. “Honestly, ask anyone—most people say their favourite part of Accessible Acupuncture is the staff.”
“I just love everyone here,” Betty adds. “The girls are always so kind. It’s like going to the doctor with my girlfriends.”
